A Cultural Case: Sports - The Cultural Value of Traditional Sports

The Erasmus+ Mobility of Youth Workers project “A Cultural Case: Sports” (Project No: 2025-1-AT01-KA153-YOU-000299955), coordinated by FI Gesundheits- und Sportverein, continued with a diverse programme dedicated to exploring traditional sports and their role in preserving cultural heritage. Hosted in Klagenfurt, Austria, the project brought together youth workers from Austria, Hungary, Netherlands, Spain, Türkiye with Kicsi Szívek Gyermekoktatási Központ Egyesület proudly participating as one of the project partners.

The next stage of the mobility focused on the traditional sports of Austria and Hungary. Participants first explored Austria's sporting heritage, learning about disciplines such as Ranggeln, Kärntenringen, Status Tag, and Kegel. Through presentations and practical demonstrations, they discovered how these activities have been preserved over generations and continue to play an important role in Austrian cultural identity.

The programme then turned its attention to Hungary's traditional sports and customs. Youth workers were introduced to Csürközés and Karikás Ostor, gaining valuable insight into their historical origins and cultural significance. Practical workshops encouraged participants to engage directly with these traditions, allowing them to experience how sport can preserve local identity while creating opportunities for intercultural learning.

Beyond the sporting activities, participants continued working on environmental sustainability initiatives and took part in daily reflection sessions, where they exchanged ideas on adapting these methods to their own communities. These discussions highlighted how traditional sports can be integrated into youth work to strengthen participation, promote cultural awareness, and encourage active citizenship.

For Kicsi Szívek Gyermekoktatási Központ Egyesület, these activities reinforced the importance of combining sport with non-formal education. The exchange of experiences and best practices provided new ideas for future international cooperation and demonstrated how cultural heritage can become a powerful educational resource for young people across Europe.
